Are you deciding between the Beachbody Shakeology shakes and Beachbody recover? If so, I’ll help you decide the best Beachbody protein shake for your needs!

As someone who has been enjoying Beachbody products since 2014, I know it can sometimes be confusing to decide which one is best for you. So let me clear up some confusion and give you the breakdown on the main differences between Recover and Shakeology.

Why a protein shake?

A lot of people love to include protein shakes as a dietary supplement in their daily/weekly eating plan. Simply put, it's a quick and easy way to include more protein in your diet.

Including adequate protein in your diet is especially important to those of us who are working towards weight loss, fitness goals and building muscle.

Consuming adequate amounts of protein while following a weight lifting program has been shown to:

  • Stimulate muscle growth and increased lean muscle mass

  • Speed muscle recovery

  • Decreased recovery time

  • Combats exercise-induced muscle soreness

Some people prefer to consume all their protein from whole food sources, but protein powder can be a great part of a balanced and healthy diet. Especially if you are someone who is busy and can benefit from having a healthy, high protein snack or breakfast on the go.

There is no magic component of protein shakes, its simply an easy way to include more protein in your diet and that’s why you see many fitness enthusiasts enjoying and promoting protein shakes.

What is Shakeology?

Beachbody created Shakeology with key ingredients which make it a high quality option when it comes to meal replacement shakes. Beachbody encourages you to use Shakeology as part of your daily routine and it's known as your “daily dose of dense nutrition” with high-quality ingredients including essential vitamins like Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, Magnesium and folate, plus digestive enzymes.

You can take a look at the full Shakeology ingredient list HERE. Different flavors may have slightly different nutrient profiles due to variations in natural ingredients.

Shakeology comes in both a whey protein powder and vegan options with pea protein and oat protein sources.

Shakeology has about 17 grams of protein per serving in most of their flavors and about 4-6 grams of fiber per serving which makes it a great option for keeping you full and satisfied and aids in digestive health.

However, with it only being about 140-160 calories per serving, it isn’t quite enough for a meal on its own, so many people add things like frozen fruit, peanut butter, leafy greens etc to bulk up the shake. Or you could simply enjoy it as a snack shaken with water/ice water.

What is Beachbody Performance Line Recover?

Beachbody’s Performance Recover shake contains 20 grams of high-quality protein, plus branch-chain amino acids (BCAAs) to help improve muscle protein synthesis. It is available in both whey protein and vegan protein formulas.

These types of recovery drinks  are geared specifically towards individuals doing intense workout routines. For example if you are doing a fitness program like Body Beast or Liift4, then you may want to include Recover in your post workout snack or meal.

Recover comes in less flavors than Shakeology. Whey comes in orange flavor and chocolate flavors. Vegan comes in just chocolate flavor. I do wish it came in a vanilla flavor as well!

When it comes to fiber, the whey recovery formula has zero fiber, but the vegan formula contains 3 grams of fiber.

Overall, Recover has less ingredients than Shakeology, so if you have any allergies to Shakeology ingredients, then Recover may be a better choice for you.

Summary

If you are serious about your fitness journey, adding in protein drinks can be a great way to easily hit your daily protein intake. Both Shakeology and Recover provide a high-quality source of protein and both include vegan/dairy-free options.

Recover is going to provide you with mainly protein and a little fiber (vegan formula only).  Shakeology is an overall nutrition shake with protein, fiber, many vitamins, minerals and ingredients your body needs, but slightly less protein than Recover.

When it comes to price, Recover is almost half the price of Shakeology so if cost is a factor and you’re looking for mainly a protein source, then Recover is the better option.

It is also ok, to have both in one day - so if you feel the ingredients in both are a match for your needs, then you may want to include both in your daily or weekly routine.
