Benefits of working out from home
Workout on your own schedule
Save time (no commute or chitchat)
Save money
Privacy
Less obstacles (bad weather or a sick kid won’t get in the way of your workout)
Customize + modify workouts to match your needs
No sharing equipment (or germs)
Overall, it is much easier to create consistency working out from home, because you are in control of more variables. Building an at-home workout space that works for you is KEY to creating consistency and getting results. You absolutely do NOT need to workout in a gym to lose weight, gain muscle, and get flexible!
What to look for in your home gym equipment
2023 is all about choices and doing what works for you. With the recent improvement of online fitness content, more and more people learned their home can be the home base for their fitness. So even if you love going to the gym, having options at home is a smart way to stay on track.
When choosing the right equipment for your home gym, its important to remember this is an investment in your health. Whether you’re working towards weight loss, muscle building or both - its important to make sure you buy the right equipment to match your goals.
Look for high-quality, multi-functional equipment that fits in your workout space nicely and can be easily accessed. The harder it is to access, the less likely you’ll be to actually use it. A home workout space should be all about removing obstacles to your next workout!
Choosing your workout space
Space limitation does not need to be an obstacle in reaching your fitness goals. Over the years I have worked out in my basement, living room, dining room, play room, bedroom, and even the kitchen! Ideally, you just enough space to move comfortably and safely based on the workout.
If you have very little space, then some yoga or HIIT may be a great starting point, but ultimately aim to have strength training equipment as well. Effective full-body workouts don’t need to take up much space at all.
Best Workout Equipment in 2023 for Small Spaces
When working out in a small space, you’re looking to get the most out of each piece of equipment. All of the pieces I share below are perfect for a home gym with small space.
Bowflex dumbbells - we have two sets of these and they are awesome! They take up very little space and you can lift from 5-52.5 pounds using the flexible dumbbell set.
Bowflex kettle bell - this adjustable kettlebell set is perfect for small spaces.
Walking pad - get your steps in with this small space treadmill. A great investment without the bulky inconvenience of larger treadmills.
Resistance bands with door attachment - get your strength training in with this versatile set. No need for a pull-up bar or weight bench, you can still get a challenging strength training workout in with resistance bands.
Yoga mat - an absolute essential for any fitness space.
Folding weight bench - if you’re serious about building muscle, a weight bench is so important. This one folds up and stores away with ease.
Best Workout Equipment in 2023 for Beginners
If fitness is new to you, or maybe you’re getting back into it after a long break - then you want to choose equipment that make your workouts easier and more enjoyable! I have been working out in my home gym for almost a decade and these items are my tried and true pieces that I used when I got started and still use today.
dumbbell set (light weights) - strength training is an essential piece of any fitness routine, but starting with the right weights is essential. Even as you grow stronger and invest in heavier weights, you will always need your lighter weights - so this is a no brainer when investing in your home gym.
resistance loops set - these are so important when you’re just getting started. They can be used for strength training and also to modify moves. Resistance bands are also easy to bring with you when traveling.
large workout mat - if you have the space for a designated workout area, a cushioned mat will protect your floors and provide support during your workouts.
Apple Watch or FitBit - I absolutely love my Apple watch! The health app has so many ways to track your cardiovascular health, step goals, and daily movement. While I don’t recommend obsessing over the numbers, it is a great way to understand how much activity you’re getting in daily.
yoga blocks - as someone who is NOT naturally flexible, I cannot stress how helpful yoga blocks can be for making your stretching routine more effective. I use yoga blocks for all yoga and mobility workouts.
yoga strap - same as with yoga blocks, yoga straps are so helpful when it coms to stretching and mobility
foam roller - muscle soreness is almost guaranteed when you start working out. I recommend a smooth 24 inch foam roller for your recovery routine.
Best Workout Equipment for Intermediate + Advanced At-Home Workouts 2023
dumbbell set (heavy weights) - building muscle requires lifting heavy and this compact set has all the basics.
heavy duty weight bench - this is a serious weight bench with all the basics and more. Take your strength training to the next level with this heavy duty weight bench.
treadmill - this treadmill has ALL the bells and whistles. Whether you’re just getting your steps in or training for a marathon, hit your walking and running goals with this heavy duty treadmill.
pull-up bar - every serious home gym needs a pull up bar. Most weight lifting workouts will use it for pull-ups, chin-ups and ab workouts. If you’re struggling, I highly recommend this pull-up assist band to get started.
fabric resistance bands - I’m obsessed with my fabric bands. They provide so much more support and the high quality elastic lasts longer than the rubber resistance bands.
lifting gloves - these are the exact lifting gloves I’ve been using for years. I’ve tried other brands, but these are by far the BEST. If you are like me and hate sweaty hands, the smell/feel of holding metal dumbbells or resistance bands cutting into your palms, then try lifting gloves. They make a huge difference when holding dumbbells and resistance bands.
Hopefully you find these ideas helpful as you build your home gym and create new routines for your health and wellness!
