Are you looking for a quick and easy salsa recipe? This is the best homemade salsa recipe using a combination of fresh ingredients and pantry staples. I have no doubt, this easy homemade salsa recipe will be a favorite for you and your family!
Why make your own salsa?
While there are a few nice jarred salsas at the grocery store, nothing beats homemade salsa! This recipe gives you a restaurant-style salsa that is perfect for chips, tacos, burritos, and more. The addition of your fresh produce to the canned ingredients gives it a fresh flavor you won’t find in store bought salsa. This delicious homemade salsa recipe is sure to be a crowd pleaser!
Ingredient List
Canned tomatoes - the recipe calls for petite diced tomatoes, but if you don’t have any on hand you can substitute with regular diced or even whole plum tomatoes. If you use regular or whole canned tomatoes, place them in your food processor or blender and give a quick few pulses before adding the remaining ingredients to your blender. If you prefer a chunky salsa, use whole tomatoes and do not blend before adding additional ingredients.
Rotel - take advantage of the flavors already in Rotel Original with green chilies. I always have a can of Rotel on hand for chilis, soups, sauces, and this salsa recipe. It is an easy way to add flavor to your Tex/Mex recipes.
Garlic - you can use fresh or jarred garlic for this recipe.
White onion - while I think white onion is best in this recipe, you could certainly use red onion or green onion if that is what you have on hand.
Cilantro - fresh cilantro is best, but these days you can also find freeze dried cilantro or cilantro paste in most grocery stores. I know not everyone loves cilantro, so feel free to leave it out.
Jalapeños - you can substitute any of your favorite mild or medium heat chili peppers in this recipe, but I always keep jalapeños on hand. If you like a mild salsa, just use 1 jalapeño. For spicy salsa, use 2-3 extra jalapeños..
Lime juice - fresh lime juice is a MUST for best flavor and that is a hill I will die on. Bottled juice just doesn’t compare and the fresh lime juice is what brightens up this salsa and almost gives it that garden-fresh flavor. You could substitute with 1-2 tablespoons of white vinegar, but that is the only substitution I would even think of using!
You can easily adjust the flavor of your salsa by playing around with the seasonings.
How to Make Your Salsa
This salsa only takes 5 minutes to make! I like to roughly chop my onion before adding it to the blender. If you need to mince a garlic clove or two, do so before adding to the blender. Squeeze your lime juice directly into the blender. Everything else can be added directly to the blender.
So easy! This is a great recipe to make for a last minute get together!
How to Serve Your Fresh Salsa
There are all different kinds of ways you can use this versatile salsa recipe.
As a dip for traditional chips and dips
As a condiment for tacos, burritos and bowls
Add flavor to soup and chili
Use as a topping for chicken, steak, or fish
This recipe makes a VERY large batch. If you don’t think you will use it all within 4-5 days, I would recommend cutting the recipe in half. This recipe is sure to be a favorite salsa recipe!
Recommended equipment
